Tangled is the 50th animated film from Disney. It's the Rapunzel of yore.
Today when I watch, with Diksha as adult and not child, it's I guess pretty evident how, even Disney's good old fairytales are not any more a 'made for children' only.
Well, there's more in a name. The name change is almost indicative of a more basic shift that's happening. It's not as much a story of 'damsel in distress rescued by dashing prince' , but a more gender equalled space of a strong and beautiful princess....a princess who is as courageous as she's dreamy.....one who can stand next to the prince and fight as a team.
Ofcourse there are the villains, the wicked witch who has Rapunzel locked up in the tower for the super powers of her seventy feet locks, or the thieves after the palace crown.
There's also a clear shift from black and white characters to a more realistic gray. Flynn, the hero not the born prince charming, but actually a fugitive with a 'wanted' tag on him, who later becomes her prince charming. The wicked witch weaving her hold through no superpowers, but through distinct passive aggressive behavior, making it not just physical but also psychological captivity.
In that sense there's the complex psychology of figuring out, and accepting layers to a person, plus the story book simplicity of connecting at a basic emotion level.

The guys in 3D have outdone themselves....there are some scenes so beautiful that they just take your breath away, and put you into that total magical space. And the songs are beautiful, each in someway bringing out the basic theme of, 'it's never too late to realize a dream'...... 'when will my life begin' or 'I've got a dream' or 'I see the light', lovely songs.
Worth a watch for sure !
