Gone With The Wind

Its 75 years since the movie, and it’s one from my top ten favorites, so thought I’d do the nostalgic dedication here.

Today you find kids using the word ‘epic’ on anything and everything, and I’m wondering if they really do find a lot more things epic, or if their standards are just so different.

This is one place I’d use the word. Really Epic. The movie, as also the book. A tempestuous love affair placed against the panorama of civil strife in America, the grace and grandeur of the old aristocratic way of life with the makes....the flowing gowns, the corsettes, the coming of age parties….in the harsh backdrop of slavery as a way of life, which also led to the movie becoming controversial alongside all the awards it won.

"The story of a woman’s life during one of the most tumultuous periods in America’s history. From her young, innocent days on a feudalistic plantation to the war-torn streets of Atlanta; from her first love whom she has always desired to three husbands; from the utmost luxury to absolute starvation and poverty; from her innocence to her understanding and comprehension of life.'

What stays are the passions, the depth, the grit, endurance and spirit of the protagonist, Scarlett…. not to speak of the underlying chemistry between Scarlett and Rhett Butler, played out so brilliantly by the vivacious Vivian Leigh and the oh so handsome, Clark Gable.

I have a personal memory too, to add to the epic feel.....of this one time when a boyfriend called me Scarlett,...and I loved it. Wonder where it’s all gone? Well, winds do blow ........so, gone with the wind I guess. :)

My yellowed and cherished copy

Gone with the Wind is one that'll stay with me forever. The forever things in life are the ones you really want to cherish, for the times that they happen, and their ability to draw you into that cherished space, by sheer whim of recall.
